PRI Workshop Follow Up Meeting – 10.05.2014

A State Level workshop on Empowering Panchayatraj Institution in Karnataka and Special Gram Sabhas for Women was organized by Karnataka Regional Organization for Social Service, Bangalore on 28.02.2014 in association with Janavikasa, Karnataka and Caritas India to reflect on the 73rd Constitutional Amendment to decentralize power which came into effect two decades back and to review, brainstorm and find ways and means to strengthen the Panchayatraj institutions. 150 NGOs participated in this Workshop and on due deliberations, it was found that there were a lot of gaps existing which had to be plugged if the benefits of the decentralization had to percolate to the grassroots. A lot of suggestions flowed which were recorded and circulated to the NGO participants for their feedback. To put these into a final shape a Core Team was constituted and a meeting called for in which the NGOs forming the Core Committee participated. After due deliberation and looking into the suggestions and recommendations received from various quarters, a final memorandum was prepared incorporating the changes that need to be brought into the Act to bring in transparency and accountability at the Gram / Taluk / Zilla Panchayat level which will now be submitted to the Mr. K. Ramesh Kumar Committee.

Rev. Fr. Peter Brank, Director, KROSS moderated the day’s proceedings and thanked all the participants.
