“PAUSTIK” – Building Community Resilience to Mitigate Malnutrition

KROSS in association with its partners, Bellary Diocesan Development Council, Bellary, Seva Sangama, Gulbarga and Belgaum Diocesan Social Service Society, Belgaum has taken up a program to create awareness on the effects of Malnourishment among children, adolescents, pregnant women and lactating mothers in 174 villages of North Karnataka in collaboration with Kindermissionswerk, Aachen.

The Goal of the Project :
To demonstrate sustainable approaches and strategies to reduce the prevalence of Malnutrition among vulnerable groups, in 174 Villages of 3 Districts of North Karnataka over a three year period.

Specific Objectives of the program :
a. Reduce underweight and under-nutrition among children, low body mass index among adolescent girls and lactating women in the project areas in the shortest possible time, by following the inter-generational, life-cycle approach.
b. Eliminate wasting (abnormal low weight) and severe malnutrition among children. (earlier termed as Grade 3 and 4 malnutrition as per Gomez Classification)
c. Reduce the incidence of low weight birth babies, infant mortality, child mortality, maternal mortality, anemia and other micronutrient deficiencies among children, adolescent girls and women.
d. Spread information and awareness to the communities to enable behavioral change regarding proper child care, care of the girl child throughout her life cycle, pregnant women and nursing mothers, and proper dietary practices within existing family budgets.

The planned key strategies are:
1. Awareness Programmes on Nutrition, Immunization, Institutional Delivery, Exclusive Breast Feeding, Sanitization & Personnel Health care for the Pregnant Women, Lactating Mothers, Adolescent Girls, Self Help Group members, CBOs (Community Based Organisations), family members and community leaders.
2. Building linkages to various Government schemes like mid-day meal, Anthyoday, BPL (Below Poverty Line), ICDS (Integrated Child Development Scheme), Kishori Yojana etc. with GOs (Government Organizations) and NGOs (Non-Government Organizations).
3. Counseling facilities to all age groups.
